Reform's first budget is a study in short-termism and broken promises.Reform UK Budget raids reserves and sells the family silver to break election pledge on Council Tax.![]()
Reform have sacrificed long-term stability in order to prevent a maximum increase in Council Tax which will inevitably cost Kent residents in terms of lost funding for years to come. The council’s own report highlights the use of £16m of reserves and £9m of capital receipts to balance this 2026/27 budget.![]()
KCC Green Group Leader Cllr Mark Hood said, “Reform UK were elected on a lie. An unachievable promise to cut council tax. Instead the administration has increased council tax by 4% just 1% below the maximum allowable. More importantly the administration has shot itself in the foot by reducing the amount it will be able to raise in successive years meaning a potential £30m shortfall over the course of the Medium Term Financial Plan”.![]()
The budget has been ‘balanced’ by raiding reserves and relying on the unsustainable diversions of capital receipts from property assets they have disposed of in order to fund expenditure or bolster the General Reserve.![]()
Reform have abandoned any commitment to paying off the current years overspend of £38m by incorporating the outstanding sum in the new years Adult Social Care budget. That budget will deprive the nursing and residential care home companies used by KCC of any inflation linked uplift which risks their viability after a challenging period where they have had to deal with the increase in the Living Wage and Employers National Insurance costs. There are huge savings expected in the Adult Social Care Budget through a combination of cuts and reorganisation, if those are not achieved as they haven’t over the past two years there are serous doubt that the councils financial situation will be resilient enough to repay the overspend.![]()
The budget fails to attribute any efficiencies to the DOLGE debacle and we repeat our calls for it to scrapped and its funding transferred to places it will actually make a difference
