If you grew up watching Vision On, Take Hart, or Hart Beat, then you’ll remember the joy of seeing artist Tony Hart transform everyday objects into stunning works of art. This autumn, fans and families have a chance to rediscover that magic at a brand-new exhibition celebrating 100 years since Tony Hart’s birth.
From 11th October to 8th November, Creative Maidstone will host a retrospective centenary exhibition of Tony Hart’s work, showcasing pieces lovingly selected by his daughter, Carolyn Ross.
The Tonbridge and Malling Green Party is not affiliated with Creative Maidstone, but we think this event is a wonderful celebration of creativity, learning, and community — values that we’re proud to champion in our own work across the borough.
A look back at an artistic legend
Born in Maidstone on 15th October 1925, Tony Hart became one of Britain’s most beloved television artists. His programmes inspired generations of children and adults alike to pick up a pencil and have a go at creating something of their own.
The exhibition will feature some of his most iconic works — the inventive pieces made from corrugated cardboard, sand, vegetables, or string that turned simple materials into art. Visitors can also expect to see his cartoon characters and original drawings, including his famous design of the Blue Peter ship. And yes — there might even be a cheeky appearance from Morph, his mischievous clay companion!
The artist behind the TV icon
Beyond television, Tony Hart was a remarkable portrait artist. The exhibition will showcase a series of his portraits, capturing people both posed and candid, revealing the depth and warmth of his artistic vision.
You’ll also find some of the original illustrations from his book Paint & Draw with Tony Hart, where he encouraged readers of all ages and skill levels to embrace their creativity — whether through paint, collage, or imaginative design.
Free admission — and a piece of local history
This free exhibition offers a rare chance to experience the life and legacy of an artist who shaped Britain’s creative culture and inspired countless people to see art in everything around them.
If you’re looking for something uplifting, nostalgic, and family-friendly this October, this is an event not to be missed.
