While this initiative isn’t run by us, we wholeheartedly support it because it aligns with our values of community action and environmental stewardship. The Great British Spring Clean and Great Big School Clean, organised by the national environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, are returning from 21 March to 6 April 2025, and we encourage everyone to get involved.
What is the Great British Spring Clean?
Launched in 2016, the Great British Spring Clean has grown into the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign. Over the past decade, millions of #LitterHeroes have taken part, collecting more than four million bags of rubbish from streets, parks, fields, riverbanks, roadsides, and beaches. Last year alone, 326,000 people across Britain filled an incredible 425,000 bags of litter, making a tangible difference to their communities.
The campaign isn’t just about cleaning up—it’s about bringing people together, fostering pride in our neighbourhoods, and protecting wildlife. As Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy, says, “We know there’s a problem, but we also know that people power is part of the solution.”
Why It Matters
Litter is more than just an eyesore—it’s a serious environmental issue. Over 30 million tonnes of litter are dropped every year in the UK, costing an estimated £1 billion annually to clear up. This is money that could be spent on vital public services like social care and education.
Litter also poses a significant threat to wildlife and pets. The RSPCA receives an average of 10 calls a day about animals harmed by litter, from plastic bags to broken glass. Zac Robinson, a dedicated #LitterHero, knows this all too well. Four years ago, his dog Ellie picked up a discarded tube of superglue during a walk, leading to a terrifying emergency vet visit. Thankfully, Ellie recovered, but the experience inspired Zac to join the Great British Spring Clean and help protect other animals from similar dangers.
How You Can Get Involved
The Great British Spring Clean is a chance for everyone to make a difference. Whether you’re an individual, part of a group, or a school, you can pledge to collect as many bags of litter as you choose. It’s easy to get started:
- Visit keepbritaintidy.org.
- Register your name, postcode, and email address.
- Pledge the number of bags you plan to pick up.
You don’t have to do it alone—gather friends, family, or colleagues and make it a community effort. As Zac says, “If everyone does this, the benefits are multiplied massively.”
The Impact of Your Efforts
The benefits of the Great British Spring Clean go beyond cleaner streets. According to a YouGov survey, more than 31.6 million UK adults say litter-free streets help them love where they live. Last year, 95% of volunteers said they enjoyed taking part, and 86% felt they were part of a national movement tackling litter.
The campaign also highlights the importance of collective action in addressing environmental issues. Many volunteers find “retro rubbish”—items dropped years ago that are still harming the environment today. By removing this litter, we not only improve our surroundings but also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from decomposing waste.
A Decade of Making a Difference
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Great British Spring Clean, and Keep Britain Tidy is calling on even more people to join the movement.
The Tonbridge and Malling Green Party is proud to promote this initiative because it embodies the spirit of community action and environmental responsibility. While we may not be running the campaign, we believe in its power to bring people together and create lasting change.
So, roll up your sleeves, grab a litter picker, and join the Great British Spring Clean 2025. Together, we can make our neighbourhoods cleaner, greener, and more vibrant places to live.
