In a move branded as reckless and short-sighted, Kent County Council has voted to abandon its climate emergency declaration and scrap its Net Zero targets. The decision, made on Friday 19 September, marks a dramatic reversal of commitments once seen as essential to protecting Kent residents from the devastating impacts of the climate crisis.
The motion — pushed through by the Reform-led administration — passed with 50 votes in favour, 21 against, and three abstentions. It not only cancels the council’s 2019 climate emergency declaration but openly dismisses the reality of human-caused climate change as “unproven.”
For many residents, campaigners, and opposition councillors, this represents nothing less than a betrayal. The council’s decision places short-term cost-cutting above the long-term survival and wellbeing of Kent’s communities, who are already suffering from flooding, extreme heatwaves, and water shortages.
Reform’s false economy
The Reform group claims that rescinding Net Zero will save the council money — £32m by cancelling property upgrades for renewable energy and £7.5m by abandoning plans for an electric vehicle fleet. But critics point out that these “savings” come at the expense of higher future costs: worsening infrastructure damage, spiralling health bills from air pollution, and missed opportunities for Kent businesses to lead in green innovation.
The council’s so-called “Energy and Low Emissions Strategy” offers little more than vague promises of recycling improvements and business support. It focuses on adaptation rather than prevention, essentially admitting that Kent residents will be left to cope with worsening climate impacts rather than seeing them addressed at the source.
Turning its back on young people and science
Perhaps most shocking is the language used by Reform. Their report claims the 2019 climate emergency declaration “scared young people” and “disallowed proper debate.” To many, this reveals a disturbing dismissal of both climate science and the legitimate fears of the next generation.
For Kent’s young residents, who will inherit the consequences of unchecked climate breakdown, the council’s decision sends a stark message: their future is not worth protecting.
A dangerous precedent
Kent County Council was once among the local authorities leading the way in acknowledging the climate crisis. Its reversal sets a dangerous precedent, emboldening other councils across the UK to abandon environmental responsibilities in the name of austerity politics and climate denial.
While Reform claims this is about “value for money,” the reality is clear: the true cost of climate inaction will be far greater. From flooded homes in Tonbridge to parched fields in East Malling, Kent residents will pay the price for a council that chose short-term savings over long-term survival.
The fight is not over. Campaigners, opposition councillors, and community groups are already mobilising to challenge this disastrous policy shift. The people of Kent deserve better than to be abandoned to a future of worsening climate chaos.
