Paul Stepto: Making a Difference on the Home School Transport Appeals Panel

Councillor Paul Stepto is a dedicated member of the Tonbridge and Malling Green Party, working tirelessly to support local families and ensure fair outcomes for residents. As part of our “Working hard, not just during elections” series, we’re shining a light on Paul’s important work on the Home School Transport Appeals Panel.

What is the Home School Transport Appeals Panel?

The Home School Transport Appeals Panel is a vital service for families who have been denied home-to-school transport assistance. When a family’s application for transport support is rejected, they have the right to appeal the decision. The panel, made up of councillors like Paul, reviews each case carefully, considering evidence from both council officers and the families involved.

Paul’s Role on the Panel

Paul takes his role on the panel seriously, ensuring that every case is treated with fairness, empathy, and respect. He explains:

“We look at the evidence from our officers and from the family, and we make what we hope is the fairest decision. The cases can sometimes be challenging, they can sometimes be emotional, but all in all, I enjoy working on them. I feel we make good decisions, and we make a good difference for our residents.”

For Paul, the work is about more than just following procedures—it’s about understanding the real-life impact these decisions have on families. Whether it’s a child with special educational needs or a family facing financial hardship, Paul and the panel strive to make decisions that support the wellbeing and education of young people in Kent.

Why This Work Matters

Access to education is a fundamental right, and for many families, transport is a critical part of ensuring their children can attend school. Without reliable transport, some children may miss out on the education they deserve. By reviewing appeals and making fair decisions, Paul and the panel help to remove barriers to learning and ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Working Hard, Not Just During Elections

Paul’s work on the Home School Transport Appeals Panel is just one example of how Green Party councillors are working hard, not just during elections, to make a difference in our communities. While elections are important, the real work happens day in and day out, as councillors like Paul dedicate their time to tackling local issues and supporting residents.

From ensuring fair access to education to advocating for sustainable transport and greener communities, Paul and his Green Party colleagues are committed to creating a fairer, more inclusive Tonbridge and Malling.
