Last month was the hottest January on record, another in a relentless stream of alarming climate milestones. This weekend marks the first anniversary of global temperatures exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for an entire year. These numbers aren’t just statistics; they represent devastation—floods in Spain, deadly storms in the Caribbean, and wildfires consuming Los Angeles.
Yet, in the face of this mounting crisis, the UK is witnessing a troubling political shift. Reform UK, a party with a history of climate denialism, is surging in the polls, capitalising on economic frustrations while actively opposing meaningful climate action. Their rise is not an accident—it is part of a global pattern where far-right movements, often funded by corporate interests, exploit economic anxieties to block policies that would challenge the power of the ultra-wealthy.
The Dangerous Distraction from Real Issues
As Carla Denyer highlights, the real villains behind economic hardship aren’t green policies but decades of government cuts, corporate greed, and the failure to invest in sustainable industries. Politicians like Nigel Farage mislead the public, blaming everything from low-traffic neighbourhoods to net-zero policies for declining living standards, while the real culprits—fossil fuel giants and deregulated markets—continue to rake in obscene profits.
Instead of tackling corporate exploitation and economic inequality, both Labour and the Conservatives cling to the false promise of economic growth at any cost. They push disastrous projects like Heathrow’s third runway, Gatwick’s flight expansion, and the £10 billion Lower Thames Crossing, all while ignoring the urgent need to decarbonise our transport and energy sectors.
The False Promise of Economic Growth
Labour’s insistence that GDP growth will solve all problems is a dangerous delusion. GDP does not measure well-being—it only reflects financial transactions. Russia’s GDP has surged due to increased arms production, but that hardly equates to prosperity. Economic growth alone does not guarantee better lives, especially when its benefits are hoarded by a small elite.
Instead of blindly chasing growth, the government should be focusing on delivering policies that tangibly improve people’s lives: affordable housing, cheaper public transport, strong public services, and clean energy security.
A Better Way Forward: The Green Vision
The Green Party has long recognised that economic justice and climate action go hand in hand. Real prosperity isn’t about maximising GDP; it’s about ensuring people have secure jobs, affordable homes, and access to a thriving natural environment.
To truly address both the climate crisis and economic hardship, Green policies would:
- Accelerate clean energy investment, ensuring wind and solar power provide most of our electricity by 2035.
- Phase out fossil fuels, cancelling new oil and gas projects and removing subsidies for polluters.
- Transform our transport system, making public transport cheaper and more accessible while discouraging frequent flying by taxing aviation fairly.
- Reform housing, ensuring all homes are well-insulated and energy-efficient to cut bills and carbon emissions.
- Restore nature, reversing biodiversity loss by protecting 30% of land and seas by 2030, banning bee-killing pesticides, and strengthening clean air laws.
The Time for Change is Now
The way our country is run right now simply does not work. People see their bills rising, their communities struggling, and their environment deteriorating. Instead of fighting for the interests of oil barons and aviation giants, our government should be investing in a future where prosperity is shared, energy is clean, and nature is thriving.
If we want to counter the rise of the far-right and the spread of misinformation about climate action, we must demand real leadership—leadership that prioritises people over profits and the planet over polluters. The Green Party is ready to deliver that vision.
