A groundbreaking global survey has revealed something powerful: 89% of people worldwide believe their governments should do more to fight climate change. Yet, many of them wrongly think they’re alone in feeling that way. This disconnect—known by researchers as the “spiral of silence”—has left millions feeling isolated, when in truth, they’re part of an overwhelming majority.
At the Tonbridge & Malling Green Party, we are delighted by this news. Not because the climate crisis is any less urgent—far from it—but because more and more people are clearly ready for real action. People are waking up, speaking up, and demanding better. It’s a moment of hope. And it’s exactly why we do what we do.
We want to speak directly to those who read this and think, “Yes, I want a cleaner, fairer, greener future”. You’re not alone. You’re part of the 89%, and your voice matters—especially at the ballot box.
Why This Matters Now – Locally and Nationally
The 125-country survey, published in Nature Climate Change, found a striking pattern. When asked whether they’d contribute just 1% of their household income to fight global warming, the majority of people said yes. But when asked what they thought others would say, they assumed most people would say no.
This gap between perception and reality is exactly what slows change. People are more likely to act when they believe others are too, and more likely to disengage when they think no one else cares.
We’re here to say: People do care. You’re not alone.
In Tonbridge and Malling, we’ve seen this growing support on the doorsteps, at community events, and through your messages. And it’s not just about climate. People want common-sense solutions in every part of public life.
The Green Party Is More Than the Environment
We’re proud to champion the environment. But we’re not a single-issue party. Our councillors—like Mark Hood, and Paul Stepto—are already proving that Green values go beyond climate.
We’re pushing for:
- Better education – with investment in local schools and real support for teachers and pupils
- Compassionate social and adult care – so the most vulnerable are never left behind
- Safer travel and active transport – with walkable town centres and accessible bus routes
- Thriving local businesses – backed by green investment and long-term thinking
- Vibrant leisure and community hubs – because quality of life matters
That’s why our campaign slogan is:
“Working hard—not just during elections.”
It’s not a soundbite. It’s how we operate. Year-round. Every ward. Every issue.
The May Elections Are a Moment of Choice
If you’re one of the many who care about the climate—or care about schools, care work, transport, small businesses, or simply doing politics with integrity—then we ask you to look closely at who’s on your ballot.
Green councillors don’t just promise change. We deliver it—in local government, in community halls, and in day-to-day decisions that affect your life.
So this May, if you’ve ever thought, “I wish someone in politics actually cared”, know this:
We do.
We always have.
And we always will.
