On 3rd February, the Resolution Foundation released a new report, Green Your Eats, on cutting emissions from agriculture and land use.
To align with current legally binding climate targets for the UK, the report recommends changes within this sector should increase sevenfold. This is likely in the long term to save money, though the Foundation also warns against leaving small farmers in particular to bear the brunt of more immediate costs, and especially recognises the plight of tenant farmers in considering land use policies.
Additional recommendations in the report include:
- Changes to fertiliser use, soil management, livestock numbers and feed
- Repurposing land for environmental restoration
- Mandate supermarkets to procure a larger allocation of food whose farming complies with emissions standards, mirroring the government’s current approach on electric vehicles
- Transfer the costs of decarbonising food production to the consumer
- Continue funding farmers for using land to reduce emissions, without inadvertently adding to landowners’ profit at tenant farmers’ expense
- Avoid merely increasing subsidies in order to absorb the cost
Current Green Party policy would almost triple financial support for farmers to aid the transition to nature-friendly methods, along with conservation and increase of biodiversity and soil health. We would also work hard to ensure lower-income families in any sector would be protected from unmanageable costs.
We believe everyone has a part to play in the important work of shaping a greener, fairer world for all.
