At the Tonbridge and Malling Green Party, we believe in Working Hard, Not Just During Elections. Our councillors are constantly listening to residents, understanding their concerns, and pushing for meaningful change—even when the cameras aren’t rolling. A recent example of this commitment is the swift action taken by Green Party councillors Lee Athwal and Mark Hood to save ancient oak trees in Higham Ward from being cut down by Clarion Housing Group.
A Threat to Higham’s Green Heritage
Residents of Higham Ward were shocked to learn that Clarion Housing Group, which owns several properties in the area, had begun cutting down large, old oak trees in the neighbourhood. These trees, some of which have stood for centuries, are not only a vital part of the local ecosystem but also a cherished part of the community’s character and history.
When Cllr Lee Athwal and Cllr Mark Hood were alerted to the situation, they immediately sprang into action. Recognising the urgency, Cllr Hood successfully secured an emergency Tree Preservation Order (TPO) from Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, halting further tree felling and protecting many of Higham Ward’s remaining oaks.
A Community Victory
The swift intervention by Green Party councillors saved numerous trees, but not before Clarion managed to cut down at least one ancient oak. Pictured below is the stump of the tree that was lost—a stark reminder of what could have happened without the councillors’ quick response.
Cllr Lee Athwal, who represents Higham Ward, expressed his frustration at the unnecessary destruction: “These trees are a part of our neighbourhood’s character and history. It’s so wrong that they can be chopped down for no good reason. We’re grateful that we were able to step in and save the rest, but it’s heartbreaking to see even one of these giants lost.”
Why Trees Matter
Trees are more than just a pretty addition to our streets—they are vital for our health, wellbeing, and the environment. They clean the air we breathe, reduce urban heat, manage flood risks, and capture carbon, playing a crucial role in tackling climate change. In Higham Ward, these ancient oaks are also a living link to the area’s history, providing shade, beauty, and a sense of continuity for residents.
The loss of even a single tree has a ripple effect on the local ecosystem, affecting wildlife, air quality, and the community’s connection to nature. That’s why the Green Party is committed to protecting and enhancing our green spaces, ensuring they remain a vital part of our borough for generations to come.
Working Hard, Every Day
This victory is a perfect example of how Green Party councillors are Working Hard, Not Just During Elections. From gathering information to navigating the complexities of council processes, Cllrs Athwal and Hood demonstrated their dedication to making Tonbridge and Malling a fairer, greener, and more sustainable place for everyone.
Cllr Mark Hood emphasised the importance of community involvement in protecting local assets: “When residents raise concerns, we listen. This is what local representation is all about—standing up for our community and ensuring that their voices are heard.”
Looking Ahead
While the emergency TPO has saved many trees, the Green Party will continue to monitor the situation and work with Clarion Housing Group to ensure that any future plans for the area respect the environment and the community’s wishes. We will also explore opportunities to plant new trees and enhance green spaces across Higham Ward, ensuring that the area remains a vibrant and welcoming place for all residents.
