At a time when many councillors only appear during elections, Green County Councillors Mark Hood and Paul Stepto are proving that community politics can be different — and better.
Representing Tonbridge at Kent County Council, Mark and Paul have worked tirelessly to protect vital services, fight for a fairer future, and bring energy, care and compassion into local politics. Here’s just some of what they’ve achieved:
Defending Local Services
From the outset, Mark and Paul have been committed to safeguarding the things people in Tonbridge rely on every day. That includes:
- Stopping further cuts to local bus routes, ensuring people stay connected
- Advocating for local SEND school provision, so children with special educational needs get the support they deserve, closer to home
They’ve stood up for the most vulnerable in the face of funding pressures — and delivered real results.
Making Tonbridge More FUN
With the help of their County Councillor Grants, Mark and Paul have injected life, colour, and creativity into the heart of Tonbridge:
- Supported River Walk Music Festival, Tonbridge Calling, and Kent Music School
- Boosted inclusive community groups like Tonbridge Pride, Tonbridge Swimming Club, and Sea Turtles Swim Group
- Funded Baby Umbrella, Tonbridge Living Well, and the SEND It’s a Knockout event
- Commissioned a vibrant mural on Avebury Avenue
- Planted hundreds of trees across the town
- Saved beloved community green spaces like Upper Castle Fields and River Lawn from inappropriate development
This is what happens when councillors put their communities first — not developers.
Making Tonbridge More CARING
Mark and Paul understand that small actions lead to big change. That’s why they’ve invested in projects that bring people together, promote wellbeing, and make Tonbridge a place where everyone can feel proud to live:
- Funded monthly community clean-ups, including cleaning the historic bridges
- Supported groups like Haysden Country Park Volunteers, Tonbridge Repair Café, and the Ups and Downz Recycling Scheme
- Helped Dementia Friendly Tonbridge create a local memory trail
- Improved access to St Stephen’s Church
- Supported Warm Spaces, FEAST food initiative, Scott’s Project Kitchen, West Kent Mind’s Solace Café, and the Citizens Advice Bureau
They’re not just talking about kindness — they’re funding and enabling it.
Making Tonbridge SAFER
Safety matters — and Mark and Paul are ensuring it’s not overlooked:
- Installed speed cushions near schools to protect children
- Funded a Six-in-One Defibrillator for emergency situations
- Delivered improved street lighting around Treetops, helping residents feel safe after dark
This Is What Working Hard Every Day Looks Like
Mark and Paul’s track record is a testament to the Green Party’s commitment to “Working hard, not just during elections.”
They haven’t just shown up. They’ve rolled up their sleeves, listened to residents, and made real change happen.
In Tonbridge, Green councillors are setting the standard — not by shouting the loudest, but by doing the work.
