Public Ownership of Military Housing is a Win for Communities and Climate Goals

The recent decision by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to buy back 36,347 military homes in a £6 billion deal marks a transformative moment for housing policy in the UK. This bold move not only undoes one of the most criticised privatisations of the 1990s but also sets the stage for creating affordable, modern housing while saving taxpayers significant money. The Green Party welcomes this significant first step and calls for the government to take this concept further to address the broader housing crisis.

A Win for Families and Taxpayers

The buyback of these homes ends the annual £230 million rental cost, immediately easing the burden on public finances. More importantly, it puts the government back in control of the service family accommodation estate, enabling the creation of modern, affordable housing for military families. Planned developments, such as the 265 homes at RAF Brize Norton and 300 more at Catterick Garrison, demonstrate how public ownership can drive the dual goals of housing security and government cost efficiency.

By reversing this privatisation, the MoD has freed itself from the restrictive terms that previously prevented it from modernising or replacing outdated homes. With many of these properties dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, this opens up opportunities for high-quality, energy-efficient housing that benefits residents and aligns with climate goals.

Housing That Works for All

The Green Party believes this approach could serve as a blueprint for addressing the UK’s housing challenges more broadly. Public ownership and investment in housing stock create long-term security for families and ensure housing remains affordable and sustainable. This aligns with our Right Homes, Right Place, Right Price Charter, which emphasises local collaboration, climate-conscious construction, and investment in community infrastructure.

Our vision goes beyond housing for military families. We aim to provide 150,000 new social homes each year, retrofit existing housing for better energy efficiency, and deliver housing solutions tailored to local needs. Public ownership of housing, as exemplified by this deal, can help achieve these goals while safeguarding green spaces and reducing fuel poverty.

Building a Better Future

While the MoD’s decision is an important milestone, we urge the government to expand on this approach. By applying similar principles to address the broader housing crisis, we can:

  • Deliver affordable housing in areas of high need.
  • Retrofit homes to meet energy efficiency standards, reducing energy bills and emissions.
  • End reliance on expensive private rentals, saving billions in public funds.

This success highlights the benefits of rejecting short-term privatisation for long-term, sustainable solutions. It’s a reminder that when housing is treated as a public good rather than a commodity, everyone wins.

What’s Next?

The MoD has pledged to develop a military housing strategy later this year. The Green Party hopes this strategy will prioritise affordability, energy efficiency, and community needs, setting an example for future government-led housing initiatives.

We applaud this step forward and encourage the government to seize this momentum. Expanding public housing ownership and investment is key to ensuring everyone has access to a warm, secure, and affordable home while tackling the climate crisis head-on.

Let’s keep this momentum going! The Green Party is committed to fighting for sustainable housing solutions that benefit people and the planet.
