Stop Rosebank and End New Oil & Gas: Join the Green Party For the National Week of Action for a Clean Energy Future

The UK stands at a crossroads. As the climate crisis intensifies, the decision to approve or reject new oil and gas projects like Rosebank will shape our future. The Green Party is leading the charge to stop all new fossil fuel extraction, and we need your help to make it happen.

From 3rd to 9th March 2025, the Green Party is organising an MP & MSP Action Week to demand an end to new oil and gas drilling. This is our chance to create enough pressure to stop projects like Rosebank and push the UK toward a clean energy future.

Why This Matters

The science is clear: to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, we must keep fossil fuels in the ground. Yet, the UK government continues to approve new oil and gas projects, locking us into decades of emissions and delaying the transition to renewable energy. Rosebank, one of the largest undeveloped oil fields in the North Sea, is a glaring example of this short-sighted approach.

The Green Party’s manifesto commits to phasing out fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to clean energy. We are calling for:

  • Cancelling recent fossil fuel licences, including Rosebank, and stopping all new oil and gas extraction.
  • Investing in renewable energy to deliver 80GW of offshore wind, 53GW of onshore wind, and 100GW of solar by 2035.
  • Empowering communities to own their energy sources, ensuring profits benefit local people through lower bills or community projects.
  • Phasing out nuclear power, which is unsafe, expensive, and creates unmanageable radioactive waste.

How You Can Help

The MP & MSP Action Week is your opportunity to make a difference. Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Ask for a Meeting
Contact your MP or MSP and request a meeting during the week of action (3rd-9th March). If they’re unavailable, you can still call or write to them.
  2. Meet Your MP/MSP
Meetings typically last 10-15 minutes. The Green Party will provide everything you need, including a step-by-step guide and briefing materials. Simply sharing your concerns can have a huge impact.
  3. Tell Us What They Said
After your meeting, let us know how it went. Your feedback will help us amplify the message and hold decision-makers accountable.

Training Sessions
To help you prepare, the Green Party is running training sessions on how to meet your MP or MSP:

  • UK-Wide MP-Focused Training:
  • Scotland Training (MSPs and MPs):
  • Follow-Up Training for Scotland:

The Bigger Picture

Stopping Rosebank and ending new oil and gas projects isn’t just about protecting the planet—it’s about securing affordable energy for everyone. Fossil fuels are driving up energy bills and deepening inequality, while renewable energy offers a cheaper, cleaner alternative.

Green councillors across the UK are already leading the way. In South Oxfordshire, Greens have linked grant funding for affordable housing to energy-efficient, fossil fuel-free homes. In Somerset West and Taunton, Green councillors are ensuring 5,700 council homes are upgraded to reduce energy bills and transition away from fossil fuels.
