To aid insect research in the UK, Bugs Matter is calling for more participants to record insect data on car journeys. From May to September, citizen scientists can use the app to log insects on their number plates, contributing to data on insect population trends. Bugs Matter has streamlined the process this year by going digital, eliminating the need for paper splatometers. Participants simply count and record splats using the app’s virtual splatometer, saving time and resources.
With the project still in its early stages, more consistent data is essential to understand whether insect declines represent a lasting trend. The Bugs Matter app, free on iOS and Android, makes it easy for anyone to join, and printable reminders are available to help track insect sightings.
Bugs Matter is also inviting companies with fleets of vehicles to partner on this national project, helping to gather data while gaining recognition for supporting environmental research. Through this citizen-led study, Bugs Matter aims to raise awareness of declining insect numbers, a critical issue for ecosystems and biodiversity worldwide.
