The Medway Valley Countryside Partnership, in collaboration with the Environment Agency, hosted an impactful river clean-up event as part of The Great British Spring Clean. Volunteers gathered at Tonbridge Town Lock on a crisp morning to roll up their sleeves and make a visible difference to the River Medway and its surrounding areas. While this event was not organized by the Green Party, the Tonbridge and Malling Green Party was proud to offer its full support.

This event, which took place in a local area many of us hold dear, served as a powerful reminder of the need for continued environmental action. It was fantastic to see local residents, alongside committed volunteers, stepping up to ensure the health of our environment for future generations.

A Growing Movement for Change

This year’s river clean-up was not just about collecting litter but also about showing that the community is ready to make a meaningful impact. Volunteers were encouraged to bring their own gloves and wear sturdy boots. As usual, there was a strong sense of camaraderie and shared responsibility. Biscuits and cold drinks were available to keep spirits high as volunteers worked together to collect a significant amount of rubbish from the River Medway’s banks.

One of the highlights of the event was Mark Hood, a Green Party councillor, who shared his experience of retrieving 28 shopping trolleys and five bikes from the river. It was a real eye-opener to see just how much waste had accumulated in our local waterways, and Mark’s enthusiasm for the task was contagious. Despite the appalling amount of rubbish, the team worked tirelessly to remove as much as they could, making a tangible difference in just one day.

As we all know, environmental issues are not limited to just a few months out of the year. The Green Party is committed to supporting initiatives like these year-round. Even outside of election season, Tonbridge and Malling Green Party councillors are dedicated to their local communities and to protecting our planet. We believe in working hard, not just during elections, and events like these are an important part of living out that commitment.

Building Momentum for Future Action

The Tonbridge and Malling Green Party is thrilled to see the community take part in such initiatives, and we look forward to supporting more environmental efforts in the future. Clean-ups like these are just one way we can help protect the planet and ensure that it remains a healthy place for our children and grandchildren to live.

The success of this event shows the power of collective action. What’s heartening is that this isn’t just about cleaning up our environment—it’s also about creating awareness of the bigger issues at hand, such as pollution and the importance of sustainability.

With each clean-up, we take a step towards a greener future, and the Green Party remains committed to pushing for systemic change to reduce waste, support recycling, and protect our waterways.

We encourage all residents, especially those who might not have attended this clean-up, to think about other ways they can get involved in preserving our environment. Whether it’s organizing a clean-up, reducing personal waste, or supporting policies for cleaner air and water, everyone can make a difference.

A Shared Responsibility

The work doesn’t stop after an event like this. The Tonbridge and Malling Green Party continues to advocate for environmental policies that prioritize sustainability, climate action, and community-driven change. We know that when we work together, we can achieve lasting change. This river clean-up was just one small part of a much bigger picture, but it was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together.

We thank all the volunteers who came out and made a positive impact. And remember—whether it’s a river clean-up or an environmental policy discussion, your voice matters. Together, we can build a cleaner, greener future for Tonbridge, Malling, and beyond.
