Revitalizing Tonbridge: A Missed Opportunity for Affordable Housing

The Source of Sound nightclub in Tonbridge, once a bustling hub of activity, now stands as a stark reminder of missed opportunities to address our borough’s housing crisis. With its developers in receivership and the property now listed for sale, the site on Avebury Avenue presents a unique chance to address two pressing issues: the growing demand for temporary accommodation and the unsightly stagnation of abandoned developments in the heart of Tonbridge.

Despite Green Party councillors, including Judd Ward’s Cllr Mark Hood, advocating for the borough council to purchase and repurpose the site, the council has rejected this suggestion, citing a lack of experience handling such projects. This decision has sparked questions about the council’s readiness to tackle more complex regeneration projects, like the upcoming Angel Centre redevelopment.

Cllr Hood highlighted the escalating costs of relying on private sector solutions for temporary accommodation, warning of the financial strain it places on councils like Tonbridge and Malling. “The council needs to set up a housing company and fill the void that the housing market cannot fill,” he urged.

A Growing Housing Crisis

Tonbridge’s housing challenges are clear. Young people are being priced out, unable to afford homes in the area, and temporary accommodation costs continue to rise. The borough council is responsible for housing those facing homelessness, yet its current stock of 23 properties is insufficient to meet growing demand. While the commission plans to add 19 more units in Tonbridge town centre, this falls short of the systemic change required to address the housing crisis comprehensively.

The Green Party has consistently championed innovative solutions to housing issues, including creating a West Kent housing company that could manage projects like the Avebury Avenue site. By taking proactive steps, the borough could transform eyesores into opportunities, fostering community cohesion and ensuring that housing is accessible to all residents, not just the wealthiest.

The Bigger Picture

This abandoned development is more than just an economic issue; it’s a social one. When derelict sites dominate our town centres, it erodes community spirit and reflects a lack of forward-thinking leadership. The Green Party believes that resolving issues like these is critical to creating vibrant, inclusive communities.

It’s time for Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council to take responsibility and invest in solutions that benefit everyone. By addressing the immediate need for temporary accommodation and tackling the root causes of the housing crisis, the borough can lay the groundwork for a fairer, more sustainable future.
