Royal Mail bosses are pushing forward plans to cut postal deliveries from 6 days a week to just 3, a move that would leave households across Tonbridge with a second-rate service. But that’s not the only bad news – the Higham Wood Post Office in North Tonbridge is also closing for good, and time is running out to speak up.
With just hours left before the consultation deadline at 5pm on Thursday 10th April, this is your last chance to demand better for your community.
What’s Happening to Royal Mail?
Royal Mail is now under the control of Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský, whose near-complete takeover comes just as bosses push for deep cuts to services.
These proposals would:
- Slash delivery days from 6 to 3 per week
- Delay important letters from the NHS, schools, and loved ones
- Undermine the universal service obligation that once ensured equal service for all
It’s a betrayal of the promise made when Royal Mail was privatised. Instead of improving services, bosses are now asking to deliver less, for the same cost.
Local Access Is Vanishing Too
As if that wasn’t enough, North Tonbridge’s Higham Wood Post Office is closing permanently on 14 April 2025.
Morrisons has decided to shut its Martin Hardie Way store, and with it, the Post Office branch will vanish. Worse still, there are no plans to replace it, meaning many residents will have to travel further afield just to access basic services like banking, parcels, or pension support.
The loss of both daily postal deliveries and local access to services is a double hit to working families, older residents, and small businesses in Tonbridge.
What You Can Do Today
- SAY NO TO POSTAL CUTS: Ofcom is still accepting responses from the public. You can send a prepared objection right now using this link:
Submit your response - But do it before 5PM on Thursday 10th April. It only takes a minute.
- SPEAK OUT ABOUT THE POST OFFICE CLOSURE: Let the Post Office know that North Tonbridge still needs local access to postal services. Don’t let our town be left behind.
The Green Party Is Taking Action
Green Party councillors are calling out the negligence and incompetence of these decisions. They are committed to fighting for public ownership, local accountability, and stronger community services.
Post and parcel services should serve the people—not shareholders. Let’s show them that Tonbridge won’t take this quietly.
You can find the original consultation documents on the Ofcom website.
